President Joyce Banda to attend ground-breaking for a new Kachaso-Nkaya railway line, expected to create over 3000 jobs

Her Excellency the President Mrs Joyce Banda will tomorrow the 6th of December 2012 lay a Foundation stone of a railway line from Kachaso to Nkaya in Neno.
The Ceremony will take place at Valley Camp Site situated in Mkwinda Village, Traditional Authority Symon in Neno district.

The President is expected to arrive at 10:00am

The new railway represents a one billion dollar investment in Malawi’s infrastructure. The new line will run from Tete to Ncala in Mozambique passing through Malawi via Chapananga in Chikhwawa, Nthache and Kanduku in Mwanza, Simon and Mlauli in Neno and Nsamala in Balaka. This is one of several projects undertaken as part of the government’s economic recovery plan.

Speaking ahead of the event, Presidential Press Secretary Steven Nhlane said “This new railway line will boost Malawi’s economy by creating over 3000 much needed jobs for Malawians. Once the railway is built, it will boost the economy further, reducing transport costs and improving access to markets for Malawi’s exporters.”
